2022: Entry into the Market of Sheet Metal 3D Printing Technology

On September 7, 2022, US 3D printer maker Desktop Metal unveiled a new technology called Figur G15, which developers claim will greatly simplify the industrial production of sheet metal, Chief Executive Officer Rick Fulop told Reuters.

Desktop Metal manufactures 3D printers, develops and sells 3D printing systems. The company was founded in 2015 to make 3D printing with metal and carbon fiber available to all engineers, designers, healthcare professionals and manufacturers.

Figur G15

Figur G15 is the first commercial platform of its kind, allowing sheet metal to be formed on demand directly from the project's digital file. The software-controlled ceramic tool on the XY shunting machine forms a sheet with a force of up to 900 kg in a special assembly area.

Desktop Metal CEO Rick Fulop told Reuters the Figur G15 technology would greatly simplify the industrial manufacturing process for sheet metal. Fulop also added that the Figur G15 would eliminate the need for traditional stamping press, custom tools and special molds, providing affordable, flexible and cost-effective sheet molding even with small production volumes.

Desktop Metal has more than 6,000 customers worldwide, including Elon Musk's BMW, Toyota and SpaceX.

Fulop told Reuters he expects the first generation of the new technology to be used to mass-produce sheet metal parts for aircraft, agriculture and heavy equipment. However, in the field of car assembly, the technology will be able to cope with the molding and stamping of sheet metal in small and medium volumes.

At the initial stage, it can support the production of less than 10 thousand cars per year, "said Fulop. I am confident that over the next two decades we will significantly reduce the need for stamping.[1][2]
