The tool is used during migration from Oracle, when tables have already been created in PostgreSQL and the program code has been transferred. Four times and more acceleration of the migration process is achieved through the use of the PostgreSQL command "copy," multi-threaded Java technology, parallel data transfer of each individual table and special data processing such as BLOB and CLOB.

Recently, an updated version of the product was released with a number of additional features. First, support for non-competitive table and column names is implemented. Secondly, the ability to transfer data of one table in parallel using several simultaneously running "copy" commands has been added. For long but narrow tables, this increases the migration rate by up to 40%. Thirdly, the operation mode "agent - > main program" has been added. This means that now ora2pgcopy can work in agent mode, which extracts data from Oracle, compresses and transmits it over the network with several parallel streams to the main program, where then it is loaded into Postgres. Two compression algorithms are supported - lz4 and gzip with the ability to adjust the compression level and the size of the memory buffer used. Thanks to this, in many cases it is possible to increase the migration speed by 5-6 times compared to the usual mode, when the utility works only on the side of one of the servers. Moreover, with the advent of an "agent," even on weak networks less than 100 Mbps, data can be transferred at a speed comparable to a gigabit network.

According to the test results, the Ora2PgCopy works much faster than other analogues - such as Ispirer (convertum), Oracle_fdw, ora2pg and Pentaho kettle.

The Ora2PgCopy utility can function as a module in the migration automation system LUI4ORA2PG or be used independently of it.

Recall that LUI4ORA2PG is the own development of FORS Telecom to automate the migration of applications from Oracle to PostgreSQL, including client and server parts. The server part is managed by the Postgres DBMS, and the client part is managed by the LUI. Using this tool can significantly reduce the cost and timing of migration projects, as has been proven in real cases.
