2022: Announcement of AR headlights projecting information on the road in front of the car
On August 22, 2022, Ford introduced high-resolution headlights that can display current data directly on the road while driving using augmented reality (AR) technology.
What was once a projector and wall game will now take lighting technology to a fundamentally different level, "said Lars Juncker, a function and software specialist at Ford's European driver assistance systems division. Now it is possible to do significantly more than just illuminate the road ahead to reduce the stress associated with driving in the dark. Drivers will be able to receive important data for them without taking their eyes off the road. |
Any information - from step-by-step navigation instructions and real-time weather data to road signs - can be transferred to the road using AR lighting. The video presented by the company shows, as an example, how the technology can be used to inform the driver of a change in weather conditions by displaying images on the road, such as snowflakes.
The system can also be used to guide drivers to the right place and show how much space remains between other drivers or cyclists.
This system is distinguished from other AR displays by the ability to broadcast information not only to the driver, but also to pedestrians and other motorists. Everyone can see projections onto the road, which theoretically improves driving safety.
Projection of information on the road using high-resolution headlights also benefits other road users, the company added. For example, pedestrian crossing information may be projected to the driver and pedestrian in situations where existing road markings may be faded or fuzzy.[1] |
