2025: Identifying a Defect - Cars Have Steering Wheel Falling Off
On September 24, 2025, Ford announced the recall of approximately 115.5 thousand pickups due to a steering column defect. The problem leads to the fact that drivers may lose control of the vehicle while driving, which increases the risk of an accident.
A notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration USA (NHTSA) said the F-250, F-350 and F-450 cars of the 2020-2021 model range were defective. These machines may detach the upper shaft of the steering column, resulting in loss of controllability. At the same time, the dashboard does not display any indicators or notifications that could warn the driver about an emergency. As of the end of September 2025, there is no information about road accidents or injuries associated with this defect.
In total, the problem affects 115,539 vehicles. Ford first learned of the fault on June 26, 2025. In the period from July to August 2025, the automaker carried out a comprehensive check of the design of the steering column.
Owners of vehicles covered by the recall program will receive a notice to provide their pickup to a dealer for inspection. Specialists will inspect the steering column and, if necessary, perform repair work or replace the defective component with a new one. It is emphasized that dealerships have already been notified of the problem and how to solve it. All work will be carried out free of charge for motorists.
Ford previously announced the recall of 1.9 million vehicles worldwide due to faulty rear-view cameras that can display an inverted, distorted or empty image.[1]
