Recall of defective electric Mustangs with crumbling running
On September 1, 2022, Ford announced the recall of the 2022 Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles because there is a possibility of their axles breaking down. According to the automaker, the production error affected the half-balls of the Mustang Mach-E right rear axle.
According to Green Car Congress, the semi-axles of 2022 Mustang Mach-E SUVs can break under load. About 1,200 cars with faulty running gear are potentially affected by a recall conducted by Ford and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). No injuries or deaths related to the issue have been reported.
NHTSA notes that if the semi-axle of the car breaks, the car can literally roll while parked. A broken semi-axle can also lead to a loss of control over the car. If a part breaks down while moving, it can lead to a threat to life, another major reason for the recall.
The problem first became known at the end of July 2022. At the Quautitlan assembly plant in Mexico, two Mach-E Mustangs were found to have broken right rear semi-axles. Ford examined the problem and found that the semi-axle data was only installed on July 18, 2022. The semi-axle was manufactured by the new second-level supplier Neapco. But one of the part manufacturing operations was carried out by Yecheng. Thus, the American electric car built in Mexico had a problem with a part made in China.
Yecheng has suspended a 100 percent inspection of the thickness of the bottom wall of the outer ring of the rear right semi-axle on the production line due to labor shortages caused by the Chinese New Year, Neapco said in a statement. |
NHTSA found that a thin wall on the outer track allowed the half-axle stem to break under load. Incorrect placement during turning on the lathe resulted in too much material being cut, which resulted in the specified minimum wall thickness of 9.1 mm being exceeded.
Ford dealers will have to check the serial number of the Mustang Mach-E sold and, if required, make a free replacement for the right rear axle. Ford will send recall letters to buyers by September 19, 2022. However, some owners have already received more prompt notifications in other ways.
Ford also said that most of the vehicles affected have not been sold, and less than 1% of the parts are expected to have this condition.[1]
Recall of 48,000 electric crossovers that suddenly stop while driving
On June 14, 2022, Ford announced the recall of more than 48,000 Mustang Mach-E electric crossovers due to fears that a safety defect could make the car motionless. The malfunction is due to the possible overheating of the car's high-voltage battery contactors, which can lead to the car not starting or losing power while driving.
Ford claims that the problem affected 48,924 Mustang Mach-E cars sold in the United States - almost half of the approximately 100,000 cars produced over the entire time.
The affected cars include 2021 and 2022 cars produced from May 27, 2020 to May 24, 2022 at the automaker's plant in Cuautitlan (Mexico). Ford also sent a notice to its dealers warning them not to supply customers with any Mustang Mach-E until an appropriate technical fix is issued.
Company spokesman Saeed Deep said the recall was also filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), although it is yet to be published on the agency's website.
Ford says the issue could be fixed with a software update to be released in July 2022. Mustang Mach-E owners can also give their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealership for a quicker fix.
The recall comes at a crucial time for Ford's electrification strategy, with the first F-150 Lightning trucks just arriving at customers. The company reports selling 6,254 electric vehicles in May 2022, up 222% from 2021 and accounting for about 4.2% of Ford's total sales. The Mustang Mach-E makes up most of those May sales (5,179 units).[2]
2020: Electric Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 announcement
In April 2020, Ford introduced the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 sports electric car, equipped with electric engines with a total power of more than 1400 horsepower and 1500 Nm of torque.
Proposed power plant comprises two-speed transmission. The rear-wheel drive electric car received the same refinements as the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet with the gasoline V8. We are talking about racing wheels with large tires at the back, a small wheel against the oprokidyvaniya at the stern, a sertifitsirovannyy safety frame and a brake parachute. The developers did not disclose other characteristics of the novelty.
The Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 will be the first drag racing car (402 meter speed competition) created at the Ford plant. It is assumed that this car will travel 402 meters in 8 seconds and accelerate at the end of this segment to 274 km/h.
Earlier, Chevrolet, together with the Hancock and Lane Racing team, built the eCOPO Camaro electric dragster, which travels 402 meters in 9.51 seconds, developing a speed of more than 225 km/h at the end of the distance.
Our new project to create an electric sports car Ford Mustang is a kind of test site on which we test new variants of components, in particular, electric motors for sports cars. This is what allows us to know what we want to improve and how, "said Ford Performance Director Mark Rushbrook. |
The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 is expected to be shown in international drag racing competitions scheduled for September 2020.[3]
Although the assembly of pre-production electric Mustangs began in February 2020, the first customers will receive cars no earlier than the fourth quarter of 2020, and the deadlines may still shift due to the coronavirus pandemic.
