2023: Start of Mass Production
On September 12, 2023, Framework announced the start of mass production of the Laptop 13 laptop computer, a feature of which is a completely modular design. This allows you to quickly change any components, which greatly simplifies repairs and opens up wide possibilities in terms of upgrade.
The device can change not only RAM modules and storage, but also the motherboard, keyboard, cooling system, speakers and even the frame around the screen. A special system of plug-in adapters Framework Expansion Card is used: in the left and right parts of the case there are two seats for modules with different interfaces. These are, in particular, USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, MicroSD, Ethernet, etc. If necessary, you can install additional drives together with the ports - with a capacity of 250 GB or 1 TB.
The display is 13.5 inches diagonally, has a resolution of 2256 × 1504 pixels, 100 percent coverage of the sRGB color space and a brightness of more than 400 nits. Depending on the modification, an AMD Ryzen 7040 (Phoenix) or 13th generation Intel Core processor may be installed. The amount of RAM reaches 32 GB, the capacity of the internal SSD is 1 TB. There are Wi-Fi 6E AX210 and Bluetooth 5.3 controllers, a 1080p camera and a fingerprint scanner.
The Laptop 13 can come ready-made with Windows 11 or DIY for self-build. The price starts at $750. In addition, Framework offers a modular Laptop 16 based on AMD Ryzen 7040, equipped with a 16-inch display with a resolution of 2560 × 1600 pixels and 100 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 color space. This model costs from $1400.[1]
2021: Laptop Announcement
In mid-March 2021, the startup Framework introduced its first product - the modular 13.5-inch Framework laptop, in which you can change any components. Only the processor or graphics chip cannot be replaced, since they are soldered on the board.
Of course, the company does not intend to sacrifice the design of a lightweight laptop if it wants to maintain wide appeal. The Framework is known to be 15.9mm thick, and it itself will be equipped with a 13.5-inch 3:2 screen with a resolution of 2256x1504 pixels, a customizable Intel Tiger Lake processor (11th generation), up to 64GB DDR4 RAM, 4TB NVMe storage or more, a 1080p webcam at 60 personnel per second and a 57WH battery.
At the same time, the Framework provides easily accessible connectors for self-replacement of RAM, storage and Wi-Fi. In addition, the user will be able to easily replace other parts of the laptop, including the battery, screen, keyboard and front panel. The company also promises to offer motherboard replacements in the future so that the CPU can be upgraded without replacing the entire laptop.
Framework will also introduce the concept of configurable external ports. Instead of a case with a specific port layout, the Framework includes four bays for so-called "expansion cards" with USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, microSD and even 3.5 mm headphone ports. With this system, users will be able not only to select the necessary ports, but also to position them relative to each other.
The company is also committed to opening up its hardware ecosystem to third parties who will be able to develop, build and sell compatible modules through the Framework Marketplace. The Framework laptop is expected to go on sale in the summer of 2021.[2]
