2023: Product Announcement

At the end of November 2023, researchers from St. Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation (GUAP) announced the development of the first system in Russia that is capable of detecting the smell of electronic cigarettes and vapes in the premises. The device is planned to be used in schools and universities in order to reduce the number of smokers.

According to the Izvestia newspaper, outwardly the gadget resembles a Bluetooth speaker. It is equipped with special sensors for air analysis. These sensors are able to detect the presence of harmful impurities: they, in particular, are sensitive to glycerin and propylene glycol, which are the main components of vape liquids. Thanks to this, you can establish the fact of using e-cigarettes in the classroom.

Through the built-in Wi-Fi controller, the device connects to Telegram servers. Teachers using a special bot can send requests for connection to the gadget for subsequent receipt of notifications. When the sensors detect that they are smoking indoors, a message is sent to the registered user's smartphone. Up to 1.1 thousand people can be connected to each device.

The gadget not only sends information about the presence of harmful substances in the air, but also shows how dangerous they are for the body. Students can also receive such messages if they install a companion mobile application. However, experts say the device is unlikely to affect vapers and encourage them to quit the bad habit. In addition, the device only detects the fact of smoking, but does not allow determining who exactly used electronic cigarettes indoors. In addition, as noted by Academician RAO, Director of Moscow School No. 109 Evgeny Yamburg, children are regularly tested with the consent of their parents for the content of harmful substances in the body[1]
