2020: Gitee Announcement - GitHub IT Development Site State Analogue

At the end of August 2020, it became known about the Chinese authorities of the analogue of the GitHub service for the development of IT projects. Thus, the authorities of the Celestial Empire are trying to localize the community of open source developers and force enterprises to use the state platform, called Gitee.

In August 2020, the official launch of Gitee took place, but the platform started working earlier. It has 5 million developers and more than 10 million repositories. The Ministry information technology of Industry and (MIIT) of China insists on localizing the source codes ON on Gitee. This issue became especially relevant after Github began to comply with the sanctions imposed, and USA Chinese developers were in a vulnerable position due to a possible blocking of the resource. It is known that Github has already blocked the repositories of users from Crimea,,, and Cubes. Iran North Korea Syria

The state analogy of the platform for the development of IT projects GitHub has appeared in China

The main question is whether Chinese developers will switch from GitHub to Gitee due to the conflict. In turn, the founder of Gitee says that he does not see himself as a replacement for GitHub and prefers "a world full of hundreds of blooming and bright colors." Many Chinese open source software developers also use the Coding.net platform, which is supported by Tencent. China's civil servants have yet to convince Chinese developers to switch to the Gitee platform. However, a number of developers back in 2019 began to successfully use GitHub and Gitee Code Cloud together for their projects.

The project is led by a consortium led by Open Source China, a Shenzhen-based firm behind Gitee. The platform is supported not only by the government, but also by research universities and the private sector, which includes a group of 10 organizations, including Huawei, which has suffered from political friction between the United States and China.[1]
