2020: Start of Google News Showcase - service for news media
At the beginning of October, 2020 it became known that Google within the next three years is going to pay $1 billion to the publishing organizations as remuneration for providing news content for the new Google service News Showcase. The new platform will allow editions to select what articles to offer readers.
The Google service of News Showcase will begin work based on the aggregator of news Google News. The project assumes access to subject blocks which will more deeply allow the publishing organizations to open a subject, including using setup of the timeline or connected with the opened subject of materials. Readers can get acquainted with a context of this or that news and also keep track of chronology of events.
Initially from Google about 200 publishing organizations from Australia, Germany, Brazil, Canada, Argentina and also Great Britain will take part in the project. It is known that the company already agreed about cooperation with some leading media, including with Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, Stern, Folha de S.Paulo, Band, Infobae. Later, according to Google, access to Google News Showcase will appear at India, Holland, Belgium.
At the initial stage of development of Google News Showcase will function on the Google News platform supported by Android devices. Further access to it will be got by holders of IOS-DEVICES and PC users. Google intends to add support of video and audio to News Showcase.
The company did not provide details how will pay publishers for content. Start of Google News Showcase is the last solution of Google on support of mass media as in August, 2020 the publishing organizations complained in European Commission of Google on the case of abuse of a dominant position.[1]
