HP 3PAR Thin Provisioning

Product
Developers: Hewlett-Packard (HP)
Last Release Date: 2014/12/15
Technology: DWH

Thin Provisioning HP 3PAR - the software solution of problems of inefficient use of capacity by a gap traditional communications between the selected and purchased capacity.

Thin Provisioning HP 3PAR independently selects and configures capacity just in time and without active participation in management.

Instead of creation of separate pools of storage the program creates one pool which capacity is selected only as the actual data writing is executed. In HP 3PAR of Thin Provisioning unit of distribution of equal 16 KB increasing system effectiveness is used.

Figurative representation of available capacity to the user, 2015

Advantages

Helps the organizations to be in time more, spending less efforts, due to reduction of advance storage costs.

  • Software of HP 3PAR of Thin Provisioning minimizes need of advance purchase of disk storage modules due to reduction of quantity of the disks necessary for data storage of applications. Approach "selection of resources at the time of record" at which physical capacity is involved only at the time of the valid data writing is used.

  • Selects and configures capacity with small increments from the uniform reservoir of a free space without preliminary selection of any type — even for data with variable requirements of the service level, allowing the enterprises to integrate storages in a uniform array with dynamic layers and the lowered influence on Wednesday.

  • The size of unit of selection is 16 KB, prevents consumption by small records of megabytes and even gigabytes of capacity, filling of volumes during installation of the file system even before data writing of applications.

  • Using scalability of storage system of HP 3PAR, clients can add the capacity when in it there is a requirement instead of putting investments in advance, at achievement by the outdated systems of limits of capacity.

  • Interacts with software of HP 3PAR of Virtual Copy and HP 3PAR of Remote Copy, helping to get rid of unnecessary duplication of capacity without records during local and remote replication of volumes.

The storage becomes more flexible and effective that leads to decrease in operating costs.

  • The decrease in capacity reached in the help of software of HP 3PAR of Thin Provisioning leads to cost reduction on SAN, to reduction of requirements to the occupied space and reduction of energy costs up to 75%. It allows to reduce current expenses of the equipment and the electric power due to elimination of need for placement, a power supply and cooling of disks which can be never demanded within months, years or at all.

  • Autonomous implementation allows administrators "configure software and forget about it". Selection and configuring of tanks are executed intellectually, timely, without active management, planning or requirement to configure storage in the form of intermediate pools.

  • Workload is reduced not only for administrators of storage, but also for the database manager and the system administrator.

  • Minimizes the licensing fees paid for many software products in the field of storage which are based on system capacity (for example, the SRM tools).

Allows to provide the lifelong storage configured under the specific application for couple of seconds and using couple of mouse clicks in the single console of management HP 3PAR Management Console which is the simplest in use within the industry.

  • Accelerates deployment of new applications and services due to disposal of planning of volumes and selection of resources manually.

  • Eliminates the downtime of applications connected with reconfiguring of volumes and adding of capacity to applications.

  • The warnings configured by the administrator and restrictions of selection eliminate risk and the need for preventive monitoring due to providing excess mechanisms for the automatic notification of administrators when exceeding physical capacity and due to prevention of "uncontrolled accomplishment" of applications.
