2023: Volla X23
On February 17, 2023, it became known that Hallo Welt Systeme released the Volla X23 smartphone, which does not have Android or Google services that invisibly collect gigabytes of information about users. The device runs on a special proprietary Volla OS system, but there is also a version of it with Ubuntu Touch preinstalled.
As reported, in terms of its hardware capabilities, this is a mid-budget smartphone, except for the display frames. Volla X23 they came from ancient smartphones from the beginning of the last decade. The mobile phone is available in a single configuration with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of built-in storage, and for it the Volla Phone asks for 538 euros (42.8 thousand rubles at the Central Bank rate as of February 17, 2023).
Price for a device in Russian retail for 50 thousand rubles. Volla OS, by the way, contains advanced security options and is able to run Android applications, which optimizes the operation of Volla X23.
Volla X23 is sold with either Volla OS 12 or Ubuntu Touch Focal Fossa. It is impossible to install two operating systems on it for February 2023 by default.
In Volla OS 12, this is the fourth generation of firmware. It has nothing to do with Google or cloud services. In the updated version, voice recognition using artificial intelligence has appeared, which will allow, for example, it is convenient to dictate text with a voice while on the road. Unlike all other voice recognition technologies, for example, Siri, Alexa or Cortana, the recognition process takes place locally on a smartphone, without an Internet connection, for additional protection. The Ubuntu Touch firmware of Focal Fossa is based on the Ubuntu 20.04 desktop OS. By default, it does not have additional functions to protect users from surveillance, as there is no support for Android applications, unlike Volla OS. The Ubuntu Touch project has existed and has been developing since 2013.
Volla X23 stands out from the vast majority of smartphones of the 2023 model year with large screen bezels. Because of them, the dimensions of the device were 161x80 mm in height and width.
What guided the developers remains a mystery. Perhaps they tried to fit a 5000 mAh battery into their mobile phone, and for this they had to artificially increase its size. But this version is hardly true, since the thickness of the Volla X23 is 12 mm, therefore, the space reserve for a battery inside the case is already large.
The Volla weighs X23 270 grams. On its front side there is a screen with a diagonal of 6.1 inches and a resolution of 1560x720 pixels, into the upper edge of which is a 16 MP front camera. The rear camera module consists of 48 MP (main) and 8 MP (ultra-wide-angle) sensors. There is an LED flash nearby, and a luminous ring is located around the module. It is activated when notifications or messages are received on the smartphone.
You can charge Volla X23 via USB-C - the interface supports charging up to 30W. Opponents of wires can replenish the phone's charge "through the air." The supported wireless charging power is no more than 15 W. The battery in the smartphone is removable, in case you need to fully protect yourself from surveillance. And for those who do not have enough 64 GB of internal memory, a microSD slot for cards up to 1 TB will come in handy.
The features of the Volla X23 include its moderately brutal design. Apparently, the Volla Phone trained the Volla Phone X models with an even more severe appearance and, when developing the Volla, the X23 decided to "soften" it a little. In total, the company has three devices in its collection - Volla X23, Volla Phone X and Volla Phone 22.
The Volla X23 case went reinforced. According to the developers, it complies with the IP68 standard, that is, ingress of water and dust under normal operating conditions is excluded. MIL STD military recommendations are also available 810H[1].
