2023: Product Announcement
On March 31, 2023, HistoSonics announced the first kidney surgery using an advanced histotripsy platform. The procedure was performed in Leeds (Britain): a team of specialists was led by Professor Tze Min Wah, a senior consultant radiologist.
The operation will allow doctors to assess the safety and technical effectiveness of the histotripsy system in the destruction of primary solid kidney tumors. The procedure is performed completely non-invasively - without the need for incisions or the use of needles.
It is noted that modern methods of treating the kidneys, such as partial nephrectomy and thermal ablation, are invasive and cause complications due to bleeding and infection. This can be avoided by histotripsy: the approach makes it possible to destroy the target tissue without damaging healthy cells. In addition, the method helps to eliminate undesirable side effects seen in traditional surgery.
The visibly controlled HistoSonics sound radiotherapy system uses patented sensor technology to perform procedures with high accuracy and effective control. The complex uses focused sound energy to create a controlled acoustic cavitation that mechanically destroys and liquefies the target tissue at the subcellular level. The company believes that the implemented mechanism of action provides significant benefits for patients, including the possibility of rapid recovery. The unique HistoSonics platform also provides physicians with the ability to track tissue destruction in continuous real-time imaging, which is not possible in the case of other solutions. The HistoSonics system is used in clinical trials.[1]
