Huawei D-CMTS (Distributed-cable Modem Termination System)

Product
Developers: Huawei
Branches: Telecommunication and communication
Technology: IPTV - Internet Protocol Television. IP television

The players who are engaged in distribution and aggregation of content, the OTT-company, telecom operators and producers of devices act on the market of video services. At the same time each of industry members aims to increase the market share due to application of new business models. With respect thereto Huawei developed the solution which has modular architecture and can be used by any market participants for step-by-step expansion of business.

Many operators of cable TV think of start of new types of interactive services. An obstacle are technological limits on cable networks. Distributed-cable Modem Termination System allows to provide a reverse channel of communication for buildings with the existing cable networks and also to place more exit points in cable subnets at the expense of more compact solution. At the same time unlike the centralized CMTS the guaranteed quality level of interactive services for end users is higher. Solutions of the distributed CMTS both for the version of DOCSIS 3.0, and for the version of DOCSIS 3.1 are announced. Huawei is the only company whose solutions (D-CMTS) and CCAP (Converged Cable Access Platform) passed strict test of CableLabs. For the first time the solution D-CCAP was presented in May, 2014, now it is successfully used by companies Guangzhou Digital Media, Shenzhen Topway and also WASU Digital TV Media Group.

Experts of Huawei consider that standard 4K will be the driving force of market development of video services both in the world, and in Russia. The solution of Huawei has complex support of broadcasting 4K of Ultra HD (from the transcoder to a line of devices with support of the H.265 codec). At the end of 2014 Huawei performed commercial start of the solution IPTV with support of broadcast of channels in format 4K for China Telecom in China.

The guaranteed communication channel at least 45-50 Mbit/sec. is necessary for rendering services of broadcast of video of quality 4K UHD. Using network equipment of Huawei company and also technology of acceleration and optimization of network, telecom operators can provide appropriate level of quality on the network. Players of the OTT-market cannot provide such quality level as have no own network. Thus, distribution of technology 4K UHD is a turning point in the market of OTT. Players of Internet broadcasting for the first time declared determination to separate income from sale of content if telecom operators are able to provide them guaranteed quality of broadcasting.

For effective use of a frequency range of LTE and also for receiving new opportunities of monetization of video services, the solution of Huawei supports broadcast of video signal per eMBMS technology (Evolved Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service). The essence of technology consists in simultaneous content delivery to a large number of users. Advantages of technology in comparison with single-address transfer are especially felt on borders of cells. It is provided with a possibility of acceptance of a signal from several stations (MBSFN – Multimedia Broadcast over Single Frequency Network). The perspective directions of use of technology it is possible to call video broadcastings in places of mass accumulation of people, video transmission with a possibility of print preview of entertaining content, advertizing distribution (for example, on the screens installed on public transport or in shopping centers) and updates of mobile devices according to a certain schedule.

At the same time the Huawei video platform is the complete solution which allows to render all variety of video services, as when broadcasting through cable networks, and networks of high-speed access and also by means of mobile networks, including using eMBMS technology.

The single Huawei video platform supports the built-in means of analytics that allows to offer the subscriber content according to his preferences and also to show targeted advertizing.

The platform has the open interface and allows third-party developers to integrate with ease proprietary applications into a system. Control of third-party applications can be exercised by means of the panel or the mobile device. Being integrated with the platform, applications have an opportunity of implementation of payments (including built in) in interaction with billing of the operator, and the operator has an opportunity to gain a part of income from such purchases.

In addition, Huawei provided a new method of monetization of Multyscreen technology. The company is sure that in the future telecom operators will be able not only to use possibilities of app store from partners, but also to give to subscribers the chance of purchases of goods using the panel from the TV. The problem is that having selected goods, it is necessary to make payment through external systems of payment acceptance. Not to enter the data from the panel, Huawei suggests to transfer the link to the mobile device after the choice of goods and to complete the payment via a secure channel by means of the convenient virtual keyboard of the device.
