2020: Hyundai began deliveries of hydrogen trucks

At the beginning of July, 2020 the Hyundai Motor company announced start of deliveries of the first-ever production heavy truck on hydrogen fuel elements. The first 10 Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell cars went to Switzerland.

The Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell model is equipped with the hydrogen power unit which power reaches 190 kW. It includes two batteries of fuel elements (on 95 kW everyone). The truck has seven reservoirs which contain about 32 kg of hydrogen. The vehicle can overcome about 400 km, time of filling with hydrogen can take from 8 to 20 minutes.

In 2020 the company is going to send 50 XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks to Switzerland. Until the end of 2025 Hyundai Motor is going to provide about 1.600 similar models. Moreover, the company is engaged in development of the long-haul tractor. This model will be equipped with more powerful and at the same time reliable power unit on fuel elements. Such truck will be able to overcome 1000 km without refueling. Such models first of all are focused on the world markets, in particular North America and Europe.

The executive vice president and the head of department of commercial Hyundai Motor transport Li Chkhol expects that formation of a difficult hydrogen ecosystem where the basic transport needs will be satisfied with such models as XCIENT Fuel Cell, will lead to paradigm shift, having eliminated not eco-friendly vehicles from the market.

Hyundai Motor selected Switzerland as a starting point for several reasons. One them them is the road tax LSVA for commercial transport which does not extend to trucks with zero level of harmful emissions.[1]
