100 million iPhone 12 models sold
Blocking sales in France due to high radiation from smartphones
On September 12, 2023, the French National Frequency Agency (ANFR) imposed a ban on the sale of Apple iPhone 12 smartphones on the local market. The reason is that the specific absorption coefficient of electromagnetic energy (SAR value) in these devices exceeds the permissible values.
The SAR score determines the energy of the electromagnetic field that is absorbed in human body tissues in one second. This value is used, in particular, to measure the harmful effects of smartphones and mobile phones on people. An audit by an accredited laboratory at the request of ANFR found that the iPhone 12 had a SAR value of 5.74 W/kg with a maximum allowable value of 4 W/kg. In this regard, a ban was imposed on the sale of these devices on the French market.
Apple must immediately take all necessary measures to prevent the iPhone 12 from appearing in supply chains. As for those smartphones that are already in use, the company should bring them in line with the requirements as soon as possible - otherwise Apple will have to recall the equipment, ANFR said in an official statement. |
French Digital Minister Jean-Noel Barreau said that the American corporation has two weeks to solve the problem, for example, by updating the software. Moreover, after the release of the update, ANFR will re-check the iPhone 12 for compliance. If the excess of SAR indicators is not eliminated, a decision may be made to withdraw smartphones from circulation.
Apple is expected to respond within two weeks. If they do not, I am ready to order the recall of all iPhone 12 in circulation. The rules are the same for everyone, including digital giants, "Barro said.[1] |

Apple recalls defective iPhones 12 over audio issue
At the end of November 2021, Apple announced that it was recalling defective smartphones iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. According to the Khaleej Times, the American company began to accept the return of the device in the United States and the United Arab Emirates, having problems with sound. The corporation noted that problems are observed only on a very small percentage of devices produced in the period from October 2020 to April 2021.
Apple on its website said it could limit repairs to the original country or region of purchase. This worldwide Apple program does not cover the standard warranty coverage of the iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro. The program applies to affected iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro devices within two years of the device's first retail sale. In this case, the user who bought the device in East Asia does not have the right to contact the office in Eastern Europe with a request to replace the device.
Despite the fact that Apple initially announced this service program in August 2021, the exact numbers about how many devices were affected by this problem are not known. If the device does not make a sound from the handset when making or receiving calls, it may be subject to maintenance or replacement. Apple or an authorized service provider of the company is required to serve the corresponding devices free of charge.
The company clarified that sound problems may arise due to a malfunctioning component in the receiver module, so these smartphones do not emit a beep on incoming and outgoing calls, and the iPhone 12 mini or iPhone 12 Pro Max may also have similar problems. As experts noted, pages with the appropriate notification appeared on the Apple support website in many regions - including the Russian Federation. This program from the company does not extend the standard warranty of user devices.[2]
Apple to pay $2 million fine for selling iPhone 12 without chargers
At the end of March 2021, the Brazilian consumer protection regulator Procon-SP fined Apple for the lack of a charger in the iPhone 12 kit. A fine of about $2 million was imposed "for misleading advertising, selling a device without a charger and unfair conditions for consumers."
The Brazilian regulator demanded the return of free chargers on December 2, 2020. Apple Corporation said that getting rid of charging will reduce the amount of carbon emissions and garbage in production, as well as the consumption of resources and valuable materials, but the regulator did not find this argument convincing.
According to Procon, Apple did not respond to a question about whether the price of the iPhone 12 dropped after the charger was removed, what the price is for an iPhone with and without a charger, or whether the number of chargers produced has dropped since the new policy was introduced.
In addition, according to the regulator, Apple misleads its customers, since the products presented in the advertisement do not meet the real characteristics. Although Apple claimed that the iPhone 11 Pro smartphone is capable of withstanding immersion to a depth of four meters for 30 seconds, this turned out to be untrue. Procon-SP stressed that Apple's warranty does not apply to breakdowns after immersing the phone in water, and this directly violates consumer rights.
Procon-SP also reported a number of other Apple issues, such as iOS update issues and unfair trading terms, in which Apple exempts itself from all legal warranties when implicit defects are identified. Procon-SP also indicated that the company does not provide warranty repair services to customers using a non-original charger and does not report the safety of using its own devices of previous generations.[3]
