2023: Development of an improved version of the device

An improved Ilizarov apparatus has been developed to lengthen or reshape damaged bones in the arm or leg. This was reported in August 2023 at the National Medical Research Center of Traumatology and Orthopedics named after ACOD G.A. Ilizarov. Operations using the new device have already begun at this institute.

The updated device is also provided with large nuts with a predetermined pitch of a millimeter. This enables the physician and patient to clearly monitor the replacement process of the bone defect by turning the nuts manually, without a traditional wrench.

According to Anatoly Sudnitsyn, a surgeon who wants to apply an updated device needs to draw spokes, screw a classic ring to the spokes and put a hinge between the rings. This greatly facilitates installation and makes the device for the doctor a "friendly" device, the specialist added.

Ilizarov's apparatus is most often used in orthopedic medicine, when it becomes necessary to correct the shape of the bone, to ensure its elongation or, conversely, compression, to correct various defects of the musculoskeletal system. In addition, this device is used to treat difficult and fragmentation fractures.^[1]
