2023: Announcement of the device

On January 18, 2023, San Francisco-based Cytovale announced the release of IntelliSep, a specialized diagnostic tool designed to quickly detect sepsis in patients.

The emergency department-focused tool helps HCWs recognize sepsis and make urgent decisions. Testing takes less than 10 minutes. The system assesses the body's response to infection using immune cell morphology. By affecting tens of thousands of cells and observing their response, IntelliSep can provide valuable information about the state of the body. The fact is that the biophysical properties of white blood cells of patients with sepsis demonstrate distinct changes: they are recorded on images, and then analyzed using a patented algorithm.

IntelliSep classifies patients into three groups depending on the likelihood of sepsis. The first category indicates a low probability of sepsis, and the third indicates the highest. It is noted that sepsis is one of the main causes of death worldwide: in the United States alone, it claims more than 270,000 lives annually. The risk of death from sepsis without proper treatment increases by 8% every hour. Up to 80% of sepsis deaths can be prevented by rapid diagnosis and prescribing the necessary therapy, according to the Sepsis Alliance. IntelliSep is designed to solve this problem.

Early detection of sepsis is an invaluable opportunity for health professionals. Rapid detection of sepsis is crucial to saving lives, but so far we have not had a reliable tool to determine such a condition. The new test provides hospital staff with the information they need to effectively identify and treat septic patients and reduce the financial and medical burden, said Hollis O'Neal, MD, of Our Lady of Louisiana Regional Medical Center.[1]
