Juniper vMX is the virtual router of the 3D series MX.
VMX is the full-function router of an operator class equipped with a control system, planning and management. It works in the Junos operating system, supports processing of packets of vTrio and works on architecture servers h86.
VMX supports difficult services of routing, including VPE and vCPE. It is focused on fast expansion of services and flexible services of implementation and modification of network. It is intended, both for operators, and for corporate applications.

VMX is offered as the software license in 100 Mbit, 1 Gbit and a step to 10 Gbit. Juniper vMX extends at least from 160 Gbit by the unidirectional transfer which can be distributed between several clients and copies of services.

2015: Juniper brings vMX to the market
On April 9, 2015 the Juniper Networks company announced an output to the Juniper vMX market. The product - a virtual image of a line of equipment MX is also scaled on performance from 200 Mbps to 80 Gbps.
There are three main models of use of the virtual router vMX:
- For use in laboratory, when modeling new service models of creation of communication networks or testings new functionality. The license for work in laboratory is free and limited only with a bandwidth of 50 Mbps
- For use in network of providers as vPE, vCPE, vBorder. It is necessary to purchase the license with necessary functionality.
- For use as a cloud solution, by delivery to end users of Cloud Router, for sale of services of the virtual router to end customers. Here the product is installed on a dedicated server with a hypervisor of KVM virtual machines. If necessary there is an opportunity to receive a demo license. It is limited to action time - 90 days, all functionality is disclosed.
Three license types are available to the end user:
- Base - is limited to bandwidth, has features:
- IP routing with the table of routes 32K
- Basic functionality of the second level - L2: L2 Bridge and router
- Without opportunities of VPN: there is no L2VPN, VPLS, EVPN and L3VPN
- Advanced - is limited to bandwidth, has features:
- IP routing without restrictions
- All opportunities of the second level, including L2VPN, VPLS, L2Circuit
- VXLAN
- EVPN
- IP Multicast
- Premium - is limited only bandwidth
