The Russian developer of medical equipment "BaikalBioMed" presented the KAFFEE machine "Kindly Anaerobic Fast FaEcal Exchange," designed to prepare and transport the gut microbiota to a patient. The presentation took place on June 4, 2024. The press service of the government of the Irkutsk region reported.

The development of the KAFFEE machine was carried out with the support of the project office of the Baikal REC and the Skolkovo Foundation, of which BaikalBioMed LLC became a participant in 2019. Due to the microgrants of the Fund, the company conducted an analysis of world experience, developed microbiota preparation technology, created a prototype of the device and received patents in Russia, China and the EAEU.

According to Yevgeny Semenov, director of the Strategic and Innovative Development Fund, the project office of the Baikal REC, the initial concept of the device was significantly revised by joint efforts in two years, preserving the basic principles of the technology. Thanks to the involvement of specialists from the ONIX Research Institute, it was possible to optimize the main nodes of the device and its software, which increased reliability and reduced cost.

According to him, the KAFFEE machine includes a device for preparing donor material for transplantation, a transportation case, a disposable set of consumables and software. The preparation of the drug for transplantation takes place without contact with air, which allows you to preserve as much as possible all the useful properties of the donor material with complete tightness in automatic mode.

Semenov noted that in 2024 BaikalBioMed LLC plans to complete internal testing of the device and begin manufacturing a small batch to obtain a marketing authorization.[1]
