2022: Patent for the method of blocking unwanted ads on smartphones
On July 14, 2022, Kaspersky Lab announced that it had received a patent for the system and method of blocking advertisements on mobile devices from the US patent and trademark office. Through DNS requests for IP addresses, the technology detects requests to advertising providers from the entire traffic flow on the device. If the DNS request from the application is associated with an ad provider, it is blocked and the user does not see the ad.
Selling advertising space in mobile apps is one of the popular ways to monetize products. However, a large number of ads tend to interfere with and annoy people, and some advertising modules may contain links to malicious and fraudulent sites.
The common technology for blocking unwanted ads works as follows: all traffic is filtered through remote servers, and then returned to the device. However, the method described in the Kaspersky Lab patent offers a solution that works locally - on the device itself. This technology avoids the main disadvantages of blockers who use VPNs - reduced speed and additional data transfer costs, that is, charge consumption.
"The delay due to sending traffic to the blocker server is often as annoying as the ad itself. Our method will help fix this problem. We study the possibilities of using the developed technology and find out how it can be used in our solutions, " - says Aleksei Komissarov, technology developer and head of development at iOS Kaspersky Lab |
