2025: A defect in electronic units that causes cars to burn

On January 31, 2025, Rosstandart announced the recall of KIA Sportage crossovers. These machines have a defect in electronic units, which can cause a fire.

The recall program was initiated by KIA Russia and CIS LLC, the official representative of the KIA manufacturer on the Russian market. It is said that defective Sportage cars may have an electrical circuit failure of the ABS/ESC unit, which will lead to an excessive increase in current and may increase the risk of fire in the engine compartment.

29,141 Sportage crossovers are subject to recall, which were implemented between 2014 and 2016. On these machines, the ABS system multiplexer and the fuse block cover will be replaced. All work will be carried out free of charge for owners. The manufacturer will notify the manufacturer of the need to provide the vehicle to the nearest dealership to eliminate the defect by sending letters and/or by phone. In addition, the owners can independently determine on the Rosstandart website whether their vehicle falls under the recall by comparing the car's VIN code with the list of cars within the framework of the recall program.

Rosstandart also reports the recall of 729 Kia Quoris cars sold from 2015 to 2018. Such machines have a malfunction of the ESC stabilization system: if there is a problem, the corresponding indicator lights up. Two ESC fuses will be replaced on all vehicles and the correct stickers will be sticked onto the cover of the fuse box.

You can find out about the presence of a car in the recall program using a special service on the Auto.ru website (Yandex project ). Initial information for placement on this platform is transmitted by Rosstandart.[1]

2024: Announcement of a car with a camera and sensors in the steering wheel

In early November 2024, Kia introduced the updated Sportage crossover with redesigned exterior and interior. One of the features of the car was a camera integrated directly into the steering wheel.

Exterior changes include a new front end with upgraded LED headlights inspired by the EV9 's flagship electric SUV, as well as modified bumpers and new taillights. Versions with 17-, 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels are available.

Two 12.3-inch screens are installed side by side in the cabin, one of which performs the functions of the dashboard. It is said about support for wireless duplication of the smartphone screen, the ability to update the on-board software "over the air" and the fingerprint recognition function. The camera on the steering wheel monitors how focused the driver is on the road and driving the vehicle. The system emits a warning signal if the motorist is distracted for too long. Special sensors are also integrated into the steering wheel to monitor the position of the hands.

The crossover is equipped with Highway Driving Assist 2 technology, which provides autonomous level 2 driving, controlling speed and distance and helping with lane changes. The function of detecting motorcyclists is implemented. Under the hood is a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine with a capacity of 132 kW (265 N·m), which works in tandem with an eight-speed automatic gearbox with a torque converter. At the same time, the turbobenzine hybrid received an electric motor with a capacity of 47.7 kW (previously 44.2 kW), which allowed to increase the total power from 169 kW to 172 kW.[2]
