Critical defect identified: Software error disables dashboard while driving
In December 2025, Kia America announced the recall of about 5,000 Sportage crossovers in the US market. The reason for the recall campaign is a malfunction of the dashboard.
Kia America clarifies that Sportage crossovers in X-Line trim levels are being recalled, equipped with a 4.2-inch dashboard and an original farcop. The problem concerns cars with an internal combustion engine and hybrid modifications with an electric motor.
The reason was a defect in the farcop controller supplied by Mobis Parts America. This module creates electronic interference, which leads to an unplanned reboot of the instrument cluster during movement. This causes the disappearance of key information for the driver, including speed data, which is a violation of the Federal Car Safety Standard No. 101 (FMVSS 101).
Kia security experts conducted an investigation, during which they reproduced the failure after 54 hours of virtual test drive. On December 10, 2025, the company imposed a ban on the sale of all unsold wire sets for farcopes from dealers. To eliminate the defect, Kia America does not carry out a software update, but a complete replacement of the hardware kit with modules with changed operating logic.
According to the company, the 2026 lineup is already using an updated controller, which eliminates the problem for new cars. Owners of vehicles affected by the recall will receive official notices by February 13, 2026.
You can check whether a particular car belongs to a recall campaign by using the 17-digit identification number (VIN) on the Kia consumer website. The check will be available from December 31, 2025. The VIN of Georgia-made gasoline models starts with the number "5," while hybrid models (PHEV) from South Korea start with the letter "K."
According to ClubAlfa, Kia Sportage remains high in the US market with sales of more than 165,000 units since the beginning of 2025. The model is available from $28,690 and comes with off-road technology including an active Dynamax clutch and a 50:50 torque distribution differential lock.[1]
Detection of defects in 79.8 thousand crossovers - the electronics of the ABS system are faulty in them
The Russian representative office of the South Korean automaker Kia initiated the recall of 79.884 thousand Sportage crossovers due to a multi-guard defect in the ABS hydraulic electronic control unit. The malfunction affects cars sold in Russia from 2010 to 2015 and produced at the Kia Slovakia plant. This was announced by Rosstandart in July 2025.
According to Interfax, the recall campaign is related to the need to replace the HECU multiplexer on all affected Sportage cars. Rosstandart pointed out that the reason for the recall was the need to reduce the fuse rating to ensure better protection of the electrical circuit of the ABS system.
InThe hydraulic electronic control unit is a key component of the brake anti-lock system, responsible for preventing wheel locking during emergency braking. A malfunction of the multiplexer can lead to a malfunction of the car security system.
Kia Russia and CIS LLC will carry out a free replacement of the defective multi-guard of the HECU unit and the cover of the fuse unit on all recalled vehicles. Car owners do not incur financial costs to eliminate the identified defect.
Representatives of the Russian division of Kia will notify the owners of the affected cars of a recall campaign through written notifications or phone calls. The company will provide personal information to each car owner about the need for service.
Car owners can independently check whether their vehicle is subject to a recall campaign. The relevant information is available on the official website of Rosstandart, as well as through the Auto.ru service, which provide up-to-date data on current car reviews.
This is the second recall of Kia cars in Russia in 2025. The previous service campaign was announced on June 2, 2025 and affected 55.35 thousand cars of various models of the South Korean brand.[2]
A defect in electronic units that causes cars to burn
On January 31, 2025, Rosstandart announced the recall of KIA Sportage crossovers. These machines have a defect in electronic units, which can cause a fire.
The recall program was initiated by KIA Russia and CIS LLC, the official representative of the KIA manufacturer on the Russian market. It is said that defective Sportage cars may have an electrical circuit failure of the ABS/ESC unit, which will lead to an excessive increase in current and may increase the risk of fire in the engine compartment.
29,141 Sportage crossovers are subject to recall, which were implemented between 2014 and 2016. On these machines, the ABS system multiplexer and the fuse block cover will be replaced. All work will be carried out free of charge for owners. The manufacturer will notify the manufacturer of the need to provide the vehicle to the nearest dealership to eliminate the defect by sending letters and/or by phone. In addition, the owners can independently determine on the Rosstandart website whether their vehicle falls under the recall by comparing the car's VIN code with the list of cars within the framework of the recall program.
Rosstandart also reports the recall of 729 Kia Quoris cars sold from 2015 to 2018. Such machines have a malfunction of the ESC stabilization system: if there is a problem, the corresponding indicator lights up. Two ESC fuses will be replaced on all vehicles and the correct stickers will be sticked onto the cover of the fuse box.
You can find out about the presence of a car in the recall program using a special service on the Auto.ru website (Yandex project ). Initial information for placement on this platform is transmitted by Rosstandart.[3]
2024: Announcement of a car with a camera and sensors in the steering wheel
In early November 2024, Kia introduced the updated Sportage crossover with redesigned exterior and interior. One of the features of the car was a camera integrated directly into the steering wheel.
Exterior changes include a new front end with upgraded LED headlights inspired by the EV9 's flagship electric SUV, as well as modified bumpers and new taillights. Versions with 17-, 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels are available.
Two 12.3-inch screens are installed side by side in the cabin, one of which performs the functions of the dashboard. It is said about support for wireless duplication of the smartphone screen, the ability to update the on-board software "over the air" and the fingerprint recognition function. The camera on the steering wheel monitors how focused the driver is on the road and driving the vehicle. The system emits a warning signal if the motorist is distracted for too long. Special sensors are also integrated into the steering wheel to monitor the position of the hands.
The crossover is equipped with Highway Driving Assist 2 technology, which provides autonomous level 2 driving, controlling speed and distance and helping with lane changes. The function of detecting motorcyclists is implemented. Under the hood is a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine with a capacity of 132 kW (265 N·m), which works in tandem with an eight-speed automatic gearbox with a torque converter. At the same time, the turbobenzine hybrid received an electric motor with a capacity of 47.7 kW (previously 44.2 kW), which allowed to increase the total power from 169 kW to 172 kW.[4]
