Serial production of KasperskyOS routers has begun

In November 2016, Evgeny Kaspersky announced in his official blog about the start of mass production of the first device on his own operating system.

The network router that Kraftway began to produce is a secure L3 level switch based on the operating system developed by Kaspersky Lab - KasperskyOS.

Our operating system turned out to be very suitable for such projects, where a small, optimized and secure platform is needed, "says Evgeny Kaspersky.

Router based on KasperskyOS ensures traffic privacy

In the router, the Kaspersky operating system is integrated into the management module, the company explains. Thus, the system monitors the legitimacy of all requests that administrators send to the device. And if an action is prohibited according to security settings, the operating system will not allow it to be performed. The main principle of operation of a secure OS boils down to the rule "everything that is not allowed is prohibited."

Kaspersky Lab thought about creating its own OS 14 years ago. According to the top manager, KasperskyOS has several features. Firstly, a micronucleus architecture, which allows for specific requirements to assemble "from cubes" various modifications of the system. Secondly, a built-in security system that controls the behavior of applications and operating system modules. "In order to hack this platform, it is necessary to break the cryptographic signature, which is a very expensive activity before the advent of the era of quantum computers," notes Evgeny Kaspersky. And, thirdly, the OS is made from scratch and sharpened for security.

According to him, cyber threats for critical infrastructure, telecom and other vital systems are no longer fantastic. He cites as an example a DDoS attack on the DNS provider Dyn, which "flooded" the sites of Amazon and Twitter for a while. It was organized by a botnet that infected "smart" devices: in particular, surveillance cameras and home routers. "By the way, the attack gave out a mind-blowing 1.2 terabits per second - the largest DDoS in history," he said. "And the recent DDoS on Russian banks, it turns out, was also using IoT."

According to the general director of Kaspersky Lab, on the basis of the OS, you can create secure industrial automation systems that are resistant to hacking, as well as create secure embedded devices, including similar routers and "things" Internet(). IoT

It is necessary to protect both IoT and, of course, critical infrastructure (industry, transport, telecom, etc.) from IT threats. But it is better to build them from the very beginning in such a way that, no matter how you fight, it was impossible to hack them. This is the fundamental goal of our big project, "says Evgeny Kaspersky.

Exit of Kraftway routers based on KasperskyOS

In August 2016, it became known that it Kraftway would become the first user of the operating system. Kaspersky Lab The Russian manufacturer of IT equipment will install KasperskyOS in its routers. This was Vedomosti told in companies.

According to the representative of Kaspersky Lab Maria Shirokova, the company developed its OS from scratch, and the key properties of the product were information security and complete traffic privacy.

Kraftway will be the first to install KasperskyOS in its equipment

The most popular Russia routersCisco Huawei in and work on the basis of their own OS of these manufacturers - respectively IOS , and VRP, the newspaper notes.

The cost of the Kraftway router running KasperskyOS will be from 100 to 200 thousand rubles, depending on the configuration, which is comparable to the price of similar Cisco solutions, says Renat Yusupov, senior vice president of Kraftway. He said that by August 17, 2016, the company had released the first batch of 1,000 devices and offers them for testing to various government agencies, which Yusupov sees as the main consumers of new equipment. Yusupov estimates the future demand at several thousand devices per month.

The representative of the association of manufacturers of electronic equipment and devices interviewed by the publication estimates the contribution of the cost of KasperskyOS to the price of the Kraftway router at 20-30%. Thus, one device can cost Kraftway from 20 to 60 thousand rubles. The manufacturer itself does not disclose the cost of the product.

Kaspersky Lab notes that KasperskyOS will not fight massive OSs for computers and servers, as the company focuses on those segments where security is primary: automated process control systems, telecommunications equipment, medical devices and the Internet of Things.[1]
