2024: OS and Ecosystem Presentation
On May 16, 2024, Yadro presented a new operating system - kvadraOS, created for mobile devices of the Kvadra brand, which are being developed by the company. Based on this OS, Yardo plans to develop a single ecosystem of products and services, focused primarily on the mass consumer.
The presentation presented the concept of an ecosystem involving the unification of Kvadra software and hardware platforms, their interaction within various scenarios and seamless integration into the life of users. According to the concept, the ecosystem consists of three key elements: hardware platforms, OS and applications.
Mobile kvadraOS is based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project, Android open source project). This gives users access to a wide range of applications that everyone is used to: "turned on, installed, everything works." The OS is offered in two versions: Kvadra Indigo for private users and Kvadra Enterprise for business clients with centralized device management functionality.
A large team is working on the operating system: Yadro Technology Director Artyom Ikoev told TAdviser that the number of the associated development team is already about 300 people. This includes, among other things, the development and optimization of algorithms, AI technologies, etc.
kvadraOS includes many components of both in-house development and redesigned open source solutions. The main source of applications in the company is called the Russian application store RuStore.
KvadraOS has a multi-user mode, where you can create a separate account for each user with isolated storage of data and files. At the same time, in profiles you can configure your own home screen, a set of applications, etc.
To preserve user settings, data and files, a backup service is provided that uses its own Kvadra cloud storage. Tablet users are provided with cloud 15GB for free. There is also an option to create a copy of the data locally on a flash drive.
Among the user tools of kvadraOS is "Center," where you can download the latest updates, contact support specialists, leave your questions and suggestions.
The Kvadra-branded product line already has various devices, but the first hardware solution to the new ecosystem is the Kvadra T tablet, which integrates Kvadra's own mobile services.
At the time of the announcement of this tablet in 2023, many on the network began to compare its design with that of a product from one of the Chinese manufacturers. Kvadra Product Director Elena Kolomina said at the presentation that, having figured out the situation, the company understood: this is the unique case when they "copied the Russian design."
The tablet is produced at the Core Fab Dubna plant in Dubna. Artyom Ikoev explained to TAdviser that the installation of printed circuit boards, the final assembly and testing of tablets are now being carried out there. At the moment, the launch of the largest printed circuit board production workshop is nearing completion, where printed circuit boards for tablets and mobile devices will be produced.
The deepening of localization does not end there. Now the tablet Kvadra_T uses an ARM-based processor, but in 2023 it became known that the company is also developing its processor. The media then featured information that we are talking about the RISC-V architecture.
Artyom Ikoev, says that his own processor has already been developed, and the next generations of the tablet line will be created on its basis. Production and technical details about the processor were not disclosed for obvious reasons.
General Director of Yadro Group Alexei Shelobkov at the presentation noted that the company heard from many the question of why to develop the direction of consumer devices in Russia. The market is small, it is not enough, it is difficult to develop here - such arguments were made. He added that Yadro has grown into a large engineering company developing solutions for IT infrastructure and telecom, and has now decided to pay attention to the consumer segment, analyzing the discomfort that employees of Yadro itself feel as consumers of digital services.
We realized that there is a huge gaping hole of needs that we, as engineers, cannot but try to address, "says Alexey Shelobkov. |
Now the user is already surrounded by many ecosystems, and Yadro does not set the task of replacing any of them, the task is to create a technological foundation that will help existing ecosystems reach their potential, give users experience in their use through software and hardware that Yadro creates.
The company notes that Yadro partners who have mobile services, voice assistants, etc., want to implement a fundamentally different level of functionality, but existing third-party devices on the market do not allow this to be done, because there is no way to go to a lower level of the hardware platform in its development, initiate some events at the OS and its kernel level that would significantly change user scripts.
2023: Product Development
On April 5, 2023, it became known that IT equipment manufacturer Yadro is developing a new domestic operating system (OS) for consumer mobile devices Kvadra. To implement this project, the company opened several vacancies on the HeadHunter platform.
The newspaper Kommersant drew attention to this. She writes that Yadro is looking for leading programmers, software engineers, as well as a manager for the development of the mobile ecosystem. According to the description of vacancies, they will have to develop a mobile OS for certain Kvadra mobile devices. The operating system is based on Android Open Source Code (AOSP).
Kvadra is a brand under which Yadro has so far released only PCs in all-in-one and classic system block formats. However, the brand's website indicates by April 5, 2023 that an 11-inch tablet PC will be unveiled soon.
The announcement does not indicate which operating system the device will run on. However, in October 2022, information about the Yadro Kvadra T40 device running Android 12 and an 8-core ARM processor was uploaded to the Geekbench performance ratings website.
It is unclear whether the tablet from Yadro will ship with Google services, in particular the Play Market app store. Google generally prevents device manufacturers from simultaneously licensing their services and releasing devices on deeply modified versions of Android. In addition, in February 2023, the main legal entity of Yadro "KNS Group" fell under blocking US sanctions, the newspaper notes.[1]
