2024: Product Announcement

On January 25, 2024, Abbott announced the Liberta RC device for the treatment of patients with movement disorders. It is said to be the world's smallest remote-controlled deep brain stimulation system.

Liberta RC can be used to treat conditions such as Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. The device generates electrical pulses to regulate the activity of a specific area of the brain. The neurostimulator is comparable in size to the dial of a smartwatch. Abbott claims that the new product provides the longest inter-charge time of any device of this type. Replenishing the energy supply is required completely on average once every 37 days, or only about 10 times a year. For users who prefer weekly charging, 30 minutes of power is enough.

The Liberta RC system is compatible with the NeuroSphere Virtual Clinic, which allows patients to interact remotely with healthcare professionals. This platform, among other things, makes it possible to remotely receive new settings to adjust the course of therapy. Thus, there is no need for a regular visit to the doctor's office.

To replenish the power supply of the neurostimulator, a wireless charger is used, which can be used during daily activities. The battery in this device allows you to fully charge the Liberta RC twice. You can control the process using a smartphone running iOS: the application provides useful notifications and various settings. The deep brain stimulation system has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).[1]
