2025: Detection of Defects in Brake Hoses

US automaker Ford Motor has initiated a massive recall of 499,129 Edge and Lincoln MKX models in the US due to a critical defect in the rear brake hoses, which can rupture prematurely and cause brake fluid to leak. The malfunction leads to an increase in braking distance and a potential loss of effective braking, which poses a serious threat to road safety. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released the recall on August 28, 2025.

According to TFLcar, 414,717 2015-2018 Ford Edge cars and 84,412 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX SUVs fall under the recall. Defective rear brake hoses may rupture during operation, resulting in leakage of brake fluid and significant degradation of vehicle braking performance.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that the defect can be detected in approximately 1% of the total number of recalled vehicles. Brake fluid leakage results in increased brake pedal travel, extended braking distance, and in critical cases a complete loss of vehicle stopping ability.

Ford has not yet established the exact cause of the rear brake hoses rupture, however, the company noted a significant decrease in repair frequency after changing the hose braid material from polyvinyl alcohol to polyethylene terephthalate in December 2017. This design modification partially solved the problem, but did not completely eliminate it.

An investigation into the issue began in 2021 after the National Office received five reports of leaks in the rear brake hoses of Edge SUVs. Ford initially identified 17 warranty claims related to the fault and conducted an internal investigation.[1]
