2025: Preparation of a pre-production prototype portable ophthalmic device
The Center for Design and Prototyping of NRNU MEPhI is preparing a pre-production prototype of the second version of a portable ophthalmic device. MEPhI announced this on September 4, 2025.
The device, called EyeZor, belongs to the category of so-called ophthalmic perimeters - i.e. analyzers of human visual fields. EyeZor is a mobile hardware and software complex for screening diagnostics and early detection of pathologies, neurologies and eye diseases.
The scientific and technological platform and the first working sample of the device were developed by ZORTEH (the general director of the company is Igor Toropov, a graduate of MEPhI). In cooperation with MEPhI specialists, the ZORTECH team prepares the device for the pre-production stage, performs the integration of key nodes and engineering preparation for scalable production.
It is very easy to use EyeZor: the patient brings the device to the eye, fixes the look on the label, the device presents light stimuli at different points and with different brightness, and the patient confirms their detection by pressing a button. In the future, the device will have a built-in camera that monitors the position of the pupil and blinking, and thereby monitoring the fixation and quality of measurements. Data from the device is transmitted to a computer or mobile device, where a visual field map is built and preliminary analysis is carried out by a medical decision support system (SPMS) based on AI. The final clinical conclusion remains with the specialist. This approach provides accurate and reproducible diagnostics without the need for a highly qualified operator and makes early screening available regardless of the presence of a stationary perimeter.
According to Andrei Morozov, head of the prototyping department of the CPI NRNU MEPhI, the current task of the MEPhI team is to integrate an optical system into EyeZor, which allows you to conduct an examination taking into account individual characteristics of vision, in particular long-sightedness and myopia. In addition, MEPhI adapts the design to the requirements of serial production, user ergonomics and preparation for subsequent clinical trials and registration procedures.
According to the head of the research department of ZORTEH, ophthalmologist, Ph.D. Ekaterina Maslova, the key advantages of EyeZor compared to existing analogues are portability, ease of operation and a significant reduction in ownership cost. In Russian and global practice, the field of view is assessed mainly by stationary perimeters. There are solutions based on VR headsets, but their high price makes mass implementation difficult. EyeZor is designed for use both in medical institutions and on the road - in feldsher-obstetric centers, mobile teams and in the primary screening of elderly patients by social workers.
A pre-production sample of the device should be ready by the end of 2025, the start of small-scale production after the completion of tests is planned in 2026.
