Release of AI assistant to programmers

In mid-December 2023, MTS introduced an AI assistant for programmers. A technology called Software 2.0 helps you write code in Java and Python. MTS plans to expand support for programming languages, adding, in particular, GoLang and JavaScript using various frameworks.

The smart assistant is able to expand code in real time, create code based on comments and technical tasks, and convert it to other programming languages.

Pavel Voronin, who holds the position of First Vice President for Technologies of MTS, noted that such artificial intelligence contributes to a change in the approach to programming, acting as an accompanying tool that conducts related analyzes and code audits. In the near future, it is assumed that up to 80% of the code being developed will be created using AI, while the developers will still retain the role of key experts who control the quality and functionality of the result.

The developer will remain an expert who makes the final decision regarding the quality and suitability of the code generated by AI, said Pavel Voronin (quoted by CNews).

According to his forecasts, the volume of the global market for technologies to help in programming will grow rapidly and in 10 years will reach $1.3 trillion against $40 billion by the end of 2023. The average annual growth rate of this market is expected at 30-45%, Bloomberg reports. This market is interesting for large IT corporations, including Microsoft, Salesforce, IBM and Google. It is with the developments of these manufacturers that MTS compares its technology, Voronin noted. By mid-December 2023, the Software 2.0 project is at the minimum viable product stage.[1]

Implementation of neural network in MTS products

MTS has developed and implemented the Sofware 2.0 neural network in order to save 4 billion rubles a year. The Russian telecommunications operator announced this on July 26, 2023.

As explained in MTS, Software 2.0 is a separate area of development technologies, which includes a plugin for the development environment, a server and the neural network itself based on generative artificial intelligence. It uses different scenarios: at the request of the developer, it issues a function or program code, analyzes the written code, and offers options for continuing it.

According to the developers, the use of the Software 2.0 generative network will reduce the time to find and fix code errors and speed up the entire process of developing and bringing new ecosystem products to market. At the same time, the use of a specially trained neural network guarantees the legal purity and security of systems when using codes from previous projects or open areas, such as GitHub, etc. Often, such open codes carry risks of information security and user data leaks due to bugs in systems.

The neural network will also help programmers quickly and without unnecessary investments to fix legacy code, which can be written not in the stack targeted for the company using outdated technologies. Software 2.0 will automatically transfer the code to a new technology stack and help fix bugs, making it easier to refine.

By the end of July 2023, Software 2.0 is working with two programming languages - Python and Java. By the end of 2023, it is also planned to cover GoLang and JavaScript with various frameworks, TypeScript, etc. The technology is tested by teams of key products of the MTS ecosystem, in particular, a cluster of technology platforms.
