2017: Installation
On June 19, 2017 Lenovo announced installation as the company claims, the biggest supercomputer of new generation in the world on Intel processors. A system under the name MareNostrum 4 is placed in the Barcelonian supercomputer center (Barcelona Supercomputing Center, BSC), in the building of the former church Chapel Torre Girona belonging to the polytechnical university of Barcelona.
Performance of MareNostrum 4 is 11.1 petaFLOPS (one quadrillion transactions with a floating comma per second) that corresponds to the 13th place in the rating of the most powerful TOP500 supercomputers published in June, 2017.
MareNostrum 4 consists more than of 3400 nodes constructed on servers of Lenovo using Intel Xeon processors. Nodes are connected by internal network Intel Omni-Path Technology of 100 Gbps with a total length more than 60 km. The supercomputer will be used for a broad spectrum of tasks — from the scientific purposes (a human genome research, in the field of bioinformation science and biomechanics) before forecasting of weather and determination of gas composition of the atmosphere.
MareNostrum 4 — this the third supercomputer created by Lenovo within the "Partnership for Advanced Calculations in Europe" program (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe, PRACE). As a result the Chinese company calls itself the largest system provider for high-performance computing for PRACE and the most fast-growing supercomputer company in Europe.
Fast delivery, installation and optimization of the MareNostrum 4 system in BSC show complete high-performance computing power — the president of division of Lenovo Data Center Group Kirk Skaugen says. — Based on our 25-year history in server calculations on architecture of x86 and our leadership regarding satisfaction of users of x86 servers and reliability, we in Lenovo pursue the aim to become the world's largest supercomputer company helping to solve the biggest problems of mankind by fast promotion of technologies and innovations.[1] |
