2019: AI technology of improvement of quality of the TV-picture, MT8175 and MT8518

On January 8, 2019 the MediaTek company announced start of several products based on artificial intelligence technologies for the smart home. Among them — AI technology of improvement of quality of the television picture and also MT8175 AI platform for "smart" screens and cameras and MT8518 for portable columns. These solutions — the next step in AI developments of MediaTek on creation of an expanded ecosystem which consists of solutions AI for hardware data processing and difficult software tools.

"We see that possibilities of artificial intelligence in the modern world are used for work not only with audio-, but also with visual images, they mention not only cloud, but also peripheral calculations. For this reason MediaTek supports wide AI opportunities on devices with voice actuation, including "smart" devices with the screen and the camera. Our last AI innovations provide more perfect visual experience for users thanks to AI technology of improvement of quality of the television picture. MT8175 provides faster, exact and high-quality capture of images for smart screens and cameras, and MT8518 — more smooth data processing between a cloud and the periphery in devices with voice actuation that opens before our clients ample opportunities on development of voice assistants in the market of portable columns".

As noted in MediaTek, the AI technology for improvement of quality of the television picture makes available such AI improvements as recognition of a plot, including face recognition, on digital TVs. Thanks to the system of recognition of a plot "smart" TV can distinguish the personnel with people from other content types, for example, of a landscape, scenes indoors or a sports scene. She allows to adapt automatically sharpness for maximizing quality of the picture and at the same time configures a color rendition for ideal display of tone of skin. Earlier TV had no such potential therefore settings of the image always were average for all types of scenes.

According to the statement of the developer, the AI technology of improvement of the television picture developed by MediaTek helps to define different types of plots by AI, and then processes this information and allows to change settings of the image respectively.

"The voice assistants integrated into screens and cameras will provide users with bigger interactivity and more useful opportunities thanks to the AI platform for work with visual images of MediaTek. MT8175 not only guarantees high quality of the picture, but also supplies devices with the module of processing of a graphic signal (ISP) and APU technology that process of capture of images was faster, exact and energy efficient".

According to the developer, an AI system on MT8518 crystal for work with audio-content opens ample opportunities for devices with voice actuation thanks to low energy consumption of the system of voice operation and reproduction and also to the developed AI opportunities, including operating time increased ten times in standby mode of this system, low energy consumption the system of receiving commands, a speaker identification and its voice commands. MT8518 provides twice longer playing of musical content in comparison with solutions of last generation.

2018: MT3620 for Azure Sphere

The MediaTek company announced on April 17, 2018 development of the first chipset of Azure Sphere, joint with Microsoft corporation — MT3620. According to representatives of MediaTek, the chipset will become the driver of innovations in the field of devices of Internet of Things with the built-in security settings and connections.

MediaTek provided the first system on a crystal (SoC) which will become a part of the solution Azure Sphere of Microsoft

MediaTek and Microsoft work together with the purpose of creation of a specialized chipset with the built-in Wi-Fi-adapter and the processor on which it is possible to start the operating system for devices of Internet of Things Azure Sphere. Support of protocols of a security system of Microsoft is built also in it.

Azure Sphere is the solution for creation of attached devices based on the microcontroller (MCU) with the high level of security and at reasonable price. Chipsets of MT3620 will be on sale as a part of the solution Azure Sphere, providing to buyers an opportunity to connect products and devices based on controllers among themselves.

In process of growth of number of attached devices more weak points appear. It means that people and the companies will give preference to convenient attached devices, only if they are sure that their devices, data and a cloud in security, consider in MediaTek. For this reason the company cooperates with Microsoft to accelerate process of transition of the market from self-contained units based on the microcontroller, to the safe, connected in a cloud devices.

Azure Sphere integrates the best practices of Microsoft in the field of cloud computing, the software and processors. It leads to creation of approach to security which begins with a chipset and extends to a cloud. MediaTek closely worked with us over creation of the processor for this solution, and we with pleasure announce MT3620, the first certified Azure Sphere chipset. Together we represent a basis for the next generation of safe "smart" boundary devices and solutions — Galen Hunt, the managing director, Azure Sphere, Microsoft says.

Technical characteristics of MT3620:

  • Support of peripheral interfaces: ADC, GPIO, I2C, I2S, PWM, SPI, UART
  • Applied processor: ARM Cortex-A7 with clock rate 500 MHz
  • Coprocessor: ARM Cortex-M4 with the module FPU (floating point unit)
  • Communication: Wi-Fi: a/b/g/n; 1T1R; 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz.

As of April 17, MediaTek selectively provides chipsets to primary clients. They will be widely presented at the market since the third quarter 2018.
