2022: Insulin Pump Announcement

On November 15, 2022, Medtronic announced the release of the Medtronic Extended infusion kit, the first insulin pump capable of functioning for seven days without the need to replace consumables. For comparison: for ordinary devices, this indicator is two to three days.

An insulin pump is a small electronic device that mimics the work of a healthy pancreas. The drug is injected under the skin through a special infusion cannula; insulin can be delivered around the clock in accordance with the patient's individual settings. Usually, on the third day of use of the infusion kit, itching and bruising may occur in the injection area. Therefore, patients have to change consumables. Medtronic specialists managed to solve the problem.

Medtronic Extended

Medtronic Extended uses materials that ensure the preservation of the flowability and characteristics of the product. A special connector for pipes improves the physical and chemical stability of insulin, and a long-lasting adhesive plaster provides comfort when worn for a long time.

The efficacy of Medtronic Extended has already been confirmed in clinical trials. It is expected that the introduction of this kit will provide an opportunity to reduce annual insulin costs by 25% and reduce the amount of plastic waste by 50% compared to conventional products. In addition, by replacing about once every seven days instead of the usual two to three days, patients will be able to save more than $1000 annually.[1]
