2023: Successful prosthesis surgery

On October 11, 2023, an international team of specialists from Sweden, Italy and Australia announced a successful operation to install a new generation bionic prosthetic hand called Mia Hand. This product, developed by Prensilia, can change the lives of many people who have lost their upper limbs as a result of injuries, accidents or illness.

A key feature of the new bionic technology is the attachment of the prosthesis to the skeleton through osteointegration. With the help of electrodes, the device is also connected to muscles and nerve endings. As a result, the product seems to "fuse" with the patient's body. Control is carried out by the "power of thought": a special man-machine interface based on artificial intelligence analyzes signals from the brain and converts them into commands for performing certain actions.

The first patient to receive a new type of prosthesis was 50-year-old Swede Karin (full name is not disclosed), who lost her hand in a farm accident. After two decades of living without a right hand, thanks to the operation, she can perform 80% of the usual daily actions, such as cooking, fastening and unzipping clothes or bags, turning door handles, transferring various objects, etc. AI- algorithms give a woman the opportunity to move all five bionic fingers separately with a 95% success rate. In addition, the system provides a limited sense of touch.

Karin wears Mia Hand without removing for three years (by October 2023). The woman states that thanks to this prosthesis, the excruciating phantom pains, which, according to her, felt as if the hand was passing through a meat grinder, have been significantly reduced.[1]
