2020: Development of the server processor of Microsoft

In December, 2020 it became known of development of own server processor by Microsoft company. The American IT giant decided to develop this project after Apple.

According to Bloomberg, by a basis of the first chip of Microsoft for servers selects ARM technologies. The head of cloud business of Microsoft Azure Jason Zander directs this project.

Because silicon is the fundamental construction block in the field of technologies, we continue to invest in our own opportunities in such areas as design, production and tools and also in adjustment and strengthening of partnership with a wide range of suppliers of chips — the representative of Microsoft Frank Shaw told the agency.

Microsoft began development of own chips for servers

It is supposed that own server processor will reduce dependence of Microsoft on third-party suppliers and will allow not to lag behind competitors in the market of cloud computing, including Amazon which works in this direction too. It is considered that processors of own development can correspond better to problems of cloud computing, providing advantages in the cost and performance in comparison with universal solutions which are generally proposed by Intel.

On news about creation of own chip of Microsoft of a stock of Intel on December 18, 2020 fell in price by 6.3%. Quotations and AMD companies fell, in 2020 increased a share in the world market of server processors to 10%.

In the publication of Bloomberg it is noted that in recent years Microsoft actively employs specialists in development of processors, including inviting former employees of Intel, AMD, Nvidia and Qualcomm. Microsoft also studies a possibility of use of other chip in future computers of the Surface family.^[1]
