More details here.

2012: MS Access Essentials

As of January 2012, among the main components of MS Access:

  • Table Builder
  • Screen Form Builder
  • SQL Query Builder (SQL language in MS Access does not comply with the ANSI standard)
  • Report Builder to print.

They can call scripts in VBA, so MS Access allows you to develop applications and databases almost from scratch or write a shell for an external database.

MS Access is file-server DBMS and therefore only applicable to small applications. There are no a number of mechanisms required in multi-user databases, such as triggers.

Significantly expands the ability of MS Access to write applications, the mechanism of communication with various external DBMS: "related tables" (connection with the DBMS table) and "queries to the server" (query in the SQL dialect, which "understands" the DBMS). MS Access also allows you to build full-fledged client-server applications on the DBMS. MS SQL Server At the same time, it is possible to combine with the inherent simplicity of MS Access tools for management DB and development tools.
