2023: Project Closure
In mid-February 2023, Microsoft fired a 100-person team that was developing and promoting the industrial metaverse. The management of the corporation decided to abandon this project in favor of other initiatives.
According to The Information, the product was called Industrial Metaverse Core. Its developing division focused on creating interfaces for the OS management of power plants, robotics and transport networks. The entire team of about 100 employees was laid off, including both co-founders.
The team, mainly consisting of a group known internally as Project Bonsai, was the victim of Microsoft's plan to lay off 10,000 employees announced in early January 2023. In addition to laying off employees, Microsoft also announced it would wind down the project. virtual reality AltspaceVR
Although employees from the Project Bonsai division were fired. However, representatives at Microsoft said the products created by the team will continue to be supported in the future. According to management, over time, priorities often depend (or not) on the needs of other businesses.
According to Nicole Gershkowitz, head of Microsoft Teams, the process of solving any task through the use of the industrial metaverse can be improved by accessing the necessary information without using hands, efficiency is increased by reducing the number of errors. Enterprises for February 2023 are already implementing the industrial metaverse and technically developed companies are using AR or MR solutions to reduce the number of errors and increase the efficiency of training in various parts of the value chain. Unfortunately, the speed of technology introduction since 2022 has decreased due to the crisis in the global economy and the complexity in the geopolitical situation.[1]
