Microsoft SQL Server for Linux is relational DBMS for the Linux platform.

On March 8, 2016 the Microsoft company announced development of the version of SQL Server DBMS for the Linux platform. For March 8, 2016 it is available to testing the preliminary version of a product providing basic functionality of the relational Microsoft Company DBMS[1].

The full-function release of SQL Server for Linux is expected in the middle of 2017. It will be ready for normal operation and to contain all enhanced capabilities of Windows version of product SQL Server 2016.

Paul Cormier, the president of Red Hat on development of products and technologies, and Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Canonical company, positively spoke of an initiative of Microsoft, considering it as important demonstration of interest of Microsoft in the Linux platform, cooperation increases and increases in investments into Linux.

SQL Server is positioned not only as DBMS, but also as the platform for data management, a business intelligence and creation of "smart" applications.
