Microsoft Visual Studio Code is the free code editor optimized for work with cloud and web applications for Windows, Mac and Linux.
On April 30, 2015 Microsoft announced release of Visual Studio Code.
The editor is based on Electron framework for creating applications on web technologies. The product has the built-in system of control of versions on the basis of Git and is specialized for development on ASP.NET and JavaScript. In addition to CSS, LESS and Sass is supported.
2020: Closing of a product, transition of users to GitHub Codespace
On August 7, 2020 it became known that the Microsoft company made the decision to close the environment for software development of Visual Studio Codespace (Visual Studio Online was called earlier). The similar functionality of this product in the online environment for development of GitHub Codespace which is based on open code editor of Visual Studio Codes will be available to users.
Microsoft explained that this solution is connected with desire of the company to save users from confusion between two almost identical products.
The Visual Studio Online project manager Ellison Buchholz-hey noted:
We consider that, having integrated the current opportunities of Codespaces in single solution, we will be able to eliminate confusion, to simplify work for all users and to achieve progress in work with a customer feedback. |
Users of Visual Studio Codespaces will need to pass to GitHub Codespaces by February 17, 2021, at this particular time it will be terminated the offer of Visual Studio Codespaces in Azure.
The prices of GitHub Codespaces which as of the beginning of September, 2020 is in the private beta are meanwhile unknown. Buchholz-hey noted that since September 4 users of Visual Studio Codespaces can begin transition to the private beta of GutHub. On November 20 Microsoft will prohibit users to create new projects though at already existing access will remain. So, new users will be able to subscribe for Codespaces only on GitHub. On February 17, 2021 Microsoft will finally close the Visual Studio Codespaces and "all plans and code spaces which remained in service will be deleted" portal.
While Codespaces is in the limited public beta, the payment for GitHub Codespaces is not levied. The final price of GitHub Codespaces will be announced when Codespaces becomes public that is expected at the end of this year, - Microsoft states. |
The company also noted:
It is impossible to move code spaces of the Visual Studio to GitHub Codespaces. You will need to recreate the code spaces as soon as you get access to the beta of GitHub Codespaces.[1] |
