2024: Source Code Discovery

On March 28, 2024, Modular announced the discovery of the source code for the main components of Mojo, a programming language designed to create applications in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Access to the platform is provided under the terms of the Apache 2.0 license.

Palo Alto-based firm Modular California has received $130 million in funding from Alphabet Inc.'s GV fund and other investors. The company announced Mojo in May 2023, and in August of that year made this programming language publicly available. By the beginning of 2024, the user base of Mojo has more than 175 thousand developers and about 50 thousand organizations.

Mojo is positioned as a more advanced alternative to Python, with which it is almost completely compatible. At the same time, Mojo demonstrates much higher performance, similar to C and C++. It is claimed that a program written in Mojo can run up to 68 thousand times faster than if it were implemented using Python. As a result, the efficiency of AI applications is significantly increased. Mojo can interact with SIMD commands, which allows you to perform many algebraic operations at a time: this also has a positive effect on performance.

Mojo components, the source code of which was discovered by Modular, form the so-called standard programming language library. This is a set of modules, classes, objects, constants, global variables, templates, macros, functions and procedures available to call from any program written in this language. Mojo's standard library includes features for tasks such as optimizing AI hyperparameters - settings that determine how a neural network processes data.[1]
