2023: Program Creation
In July 2023, it became known about the creation of a program in Russia, which, according to its developers, will significantly speed up the production of skull implants. The authors of the technology are scientists from the Novosibirsk Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (NIITO) and their colleagues from the Institute of Informatics Systems named after Yershov SB RAS.
The technology implemented on the basis of the neural network works through the cloud. The patient loads CT images of the skull into it, and the neural network already processes them and creates a model for the implant. After image processing, the model is transferred to an engineer who analyzes the correct construction and corrects, or processes it to an ideal result. Such a symbiosis of human experience and artificial intelligence avoids errors and ensures the quality of implants, the researchers say.
According to them, the new approach can reduce the time for creating sketches by half, speed up the manufacturing process and increase the outflow of patients. This method will be implemented within two to three years and will significantly improve the production of implants for the skull, the researchers believe.
According to TASS, citing a senior researcher at NIITO, neurosurgeon Sergei Mishinov, the creation of an implant cannot be completely given to a neural network, because in case of an error it may not suit the patient during the operation. Therefore, the program developed by scientists should be perceived as an assistant for engineers. According to the surgeon, the new approach is based on the fact that a person's skull is a stereotypical spatial model, and it is possible to predict what its anatomy should look like. By the end of July 2023, the invention is registered as a computer program and is undergoing an approbation stage. The timing of the start of the product implementation is not called.[1]
