In Russia, in August 2024, a device was presented to provide the satellite Internet of Things, developed by scientists from Novosibirsk State University (NSU). The device designed for installation on a spacecraft allows short messages to be exchanged with ground sensors, providing communication within the framework of the Internet of Things (IoT).
According to TASS, the device created for the Marathon spacecraft is an on-board radio engineering complex, which will become a key part of the future satellite constellation. The project plans to create 264 such devices that will provide global coverage for the transmission of data from various ground sensors. The device developed at NSU allows you to maintain the operation of sensors with a long battery life, which is especially important for the stable and long-term operation of Internet of Things systems.
Vitaly Prokopyev, head of the aerospace research department of NSU, noted that the device is a unique solution, including 52 base stations, each of which is capable of serving up to 8 thousand sensors. Ground-based IoT systems typically use a single base station for such a load, making the new development efficient and high-tech.
The first device has already been supplied to the company "Information Satellite Systems named after Academician Reshetnev" (ISS Reshetneva), which is part of the state corporation "Roscosmos." The second device is being tested and will be handed over to the customer by the end of 2024. In total, it is planned to manufacture more than 200 such complexes, which will provide a significant expansion of the capabilities of the satellite Internet of Things in Russia and beyond.[1]
