2025: Product Announcement
In early September 2025, a team of specialists from Yang Ming Jiaotong National University (NYCU) presented the world's first smart glasses that can adjust vision near and far. This achievement promises to radically change the approach to vision correction, as well as expand the capabilities of augmented (AR) and virtual (VR) reality systems.
Traditional bifocal glasses allow you to switch between near and far vision by tilting your head or adjusting viewing angles. The new device works differently. The glasses are equipped with liquid crystal lenses, the refractive power of which can be accurately adjusted under the action of an electric field created by microelectronics built into the frame. Simply touching the temple instantly switches focus between near and far objects. The gadget receives power from a compact built-in battery. At the same time, the device is characterized by a small mass.
| This concept has existed since the 1970s, but no one could put it into practice in glasses designed for everyday wear. Our gradient refractive index design overcomes existing obstacles, allowing smooth adjustment of focal length with minimal distortion, says Professor Yi-Hsin Lin, head of work. |
The development of the novelty was carried out with the support of the National Council for Science and Technology of Taiwan and Innolux Corporation. The project was also attended by British specialists from the University of Leeds. As noted, in addition to correction of myopia and presbyopia, the developed technology opens up new opportunities for wearable displays, significantly improving the optical characteristics of augmented and virtual reality devices.[1]
