2025: Product recall due to detection of toxins that cause sepsis and vision loss

On December 10, 2025, Nestle announced the recall of Nan infant formula in Europe due to the discovery of gram-positive spore-forming soil bacteria Bacillus cereus. They can cause sepsis and vision loss.

The problem affects products that are sold under various brands. In Finland, the recall concerns Nan Sensilac 1 mixture (800 g), in Denmark - Nan Expertpro Sensilac 1, in other countries - Nan 1 Optipro (400 and 800 g) and Nan 1 Comfortis (800 g).

Toxins causing sepsis and vision loss found in Nestle infant formula

The bacteria were reportedly found in one of the production lines at the plant that produces said mixtures. According to Food Safety News, we can talk about an enterprise in Nünspeth in the Netherlands. Bacillus cereus causes nutritional toxicoinfections in humans, including emetic and diarrheal syndromes. In immunocompromised individuals, the bacterium can provoke serious infections, including septicemia (a severe form of sepsis in which bacteria enter the bloodstream, causing a systemic inflammatory response throughout the body) and endophthalmitis (a serious purulent inflammation of the internal structures of the eye) at risk of vision loss.

As noted by Rospotrebnadzor, all batches of mixtures in which the content of cerulide toxin (produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus) was detected were blocked and not supplied to Russia. Nestle has initiated investigations to establish the root cause of product contamination. It is stated that as of the recall date, no confirmed cases of diseases related to the use of these infant formula have been reported.
