2023: Product Announcement
On April 5, 2023, the American company Synapse Biomedical announced the release of the NeuRx diaphragm stimulation system (NeuRx DPS), designed for patients with spinal cord injuries who require mechanical ventilation (IVL).
Compared to traditional ventilators, the NeuRx DPS device provides a more natural breathing method. Instead of using positive pressure (air injection), this device forms ventilation with negative pressure, imitating the natural life of the body.
The NeuRx DPS device produces electrical stimulation through four percutaneous intramuscular electrodes implanted into the diaphragm by minimally invasive laparoscopy. The device receives power from batteries. The system targets patients with spinal cord injuries who lack control of their diaphragm. People aged 18 and over can use the device to maintain breathing without the help of a ventilator for at least four hours continuously a day. At the same time, according to Synapse Biomedical, many patients use the device up to 24 hours a day.
The initiator of the development of NeuRx DPS is Dr. Raymond Onders, Chair of Surgical Innovation at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. J. Thomas Mortimer, professor of biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve University, participated in the creation of the system. The first NeuRx DPS implant underwent a clinical trial in 2000.
Synapse Biomedical aims to help people get rid of mechanical ventilators. Now we can make our stimulant available to many more patients around the world, "said Anthony Ignagni, CEO and founder of Synapse Biomedical.[1] |
