2020: Plans of an output to the market of Open RAN technology

Nokia announced on July 8, 2020 readiness to strengthen the position in the field of open solutions for mobile communication. For this purpose the company intends to accelerate sharply development of the Open RAN interfaces (O-RAN) for AirScale family products. It is optimization of a system of wireless access (RAN) will allow to extend an open ecosystem of innovations and to provide a reliable chain of telecommunication deliveries with simultaneous support of high performance and security.

The solutions O-RAN, including open interfaces, will be set over the existing software of AirScale Nokia. Making the decision on development of open interfaces for existing solutions of Nokia, the company prepares for work with a network architecture of the future which will be able to function irrespective of, the operator will select O-RAN technology or not. The first packet of the O-RAN functions will appear in the market in 2020. The full range of interfaces of O-RAN should appear during 2021.

Nokia increases investments into O-RAN technology and gives to operators, regulators and political leaders confidence in reliability of open telecommunication solutions and supply chains, irrespective of factors of the competition and security of infrastructure of a 5G. Nokia already invested heavily in O-RAN and provided fast distribution of RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) intelligent controllers and open fronthaul technology.

Besides, Nokia announced the products AirScale Cloud RAN of the last generation. As the solutions RAN, Cloud RAN and O-RAN Nokia use the same software, customers of Nokia receive big flexibility and freedom of choice in determination of a network architecture without prejudice to network functions, performance and security.

Nokia the company in the field of construction of the open mobile future also invests means in the solutions Open RAN and Cloud RAN to create the powerful telecommunication ecosystem capable to support the high performance and security of networks. The solution Cloud RAN Nokia continues to be developed, turning into completely cloud computing architecture.

Several operators already expressed support to Open RAN as this technology has high flexibility. Besides, traditional operators already use O-RAN for product development and their implementation in the complex networks. As a result we observe the birth of the ecosystem allowing to create specialized solutions for a set of scopes. Nokia is the large vendor which is actively creating interfaces of O-RAN. Thus, the solutions Nokia 5G RAN will support future open ecosystem which is so necessary to operators.
