2020: O-City partners with Visa Ready for Transit program
On July 2, 2020, the BOC Group of Companies announced that its O-City division, which deals with payment technologies for smart cities, has become a partner in the Visa Ready for Transit program in the field of passenger transportation. Visa Ready for Transit is designed for manufacturers who, like O-City, create the opportunity for transport companies and carriers to accept fares with contactless cards and electronic wallets with their technology products and services. Membership in the program means that O-City is a certified Visa partner and this solution can be implemented in any city in the world to accelerate the process of its digital transformation.
The BOC Group of Companies noted that usually organizations managing passenger transportation create their own systems for paying for travel in buses, metro, trams and trains. They use closed-type cards that are valid for one specific type of transport and for nothing else. Such systems are characterized by high cost and lack of any flexibility in settings, and in addition, they force the transport operators who own them to perform some of the functions of banks.
As for the program, it stimulates the creation of transport ecosystems working with open technologies. The introduction of "open" payment solutions eliminates the need to organize and maintain complex payment systems, and the ability for passengers to pay with mobile phones or cards they already have helps to improve the quality of service, and transport companies can focus on this aspect of their work.
According to the developer, the transition to contactless payments through open systems will help change the lives of people using public transport services around the world. At the same time, both carriers and passengers will win, and if the fare is reduced, this will make public transport more accessible and increase passenger traffic.
"Contactless fare payment technologies in public transport are being introduced at an accelerated pace, and the global situation with COVID-19 is an additional incentive for their spread. Thanks to these technologies, it is more convenient for passengers to pay for travel in a contactless way, and we see an increase in the share of such payments in urban transport networks. E-ticketing will help increase user loyalty and industry profitability. For O-City, joining the Visa Ready program was an important milestone in plans to promote global digital transformation in collaboration with transportation companies around the world, " noted Tahir Abdukadyrov, Senior Vice President and Head of the Department of Social and Infrastructure Solutions for Smart Cities |
According to the developer's statement, the use of contactless payments on public transport trips is growing around the world, freeing passengers from having to carry paper tickets or have an additional transport card, as well as queuing at the checkout to top up the card or buy a ticket. In addition, contactless payments do not require entering a PIN code, so passengers pass the turnstiles without delay and trips pass without any interference from beginning to end.
