oVirt is a free cross-platform management system for virtualization and a hypervisor with support from Red Hat.
oVirt is based on Kernel-based Virtual Machine technology.
Allows to operate virtual machines via the web interface, using libvirt library for administration. It can be loaded from the flash drive with a capacity of 64 MB.
On December 14, 2011 also announced the companies support of the project Canonical Cisco IBM Intel, NetApp and SUSE.
2016: oVirt 4.0
On June 23, 2016 the ovirtsoobshchil project about oVirt 4.0 release exit. Together with the statement for a release exit developers reported: oVirt - an alternative VMware vSphere on open platforms - Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.2 CentOS Linux 7.2 and others[1].
Additional opportunities of the upgraded software:
- web management portal (Administration Portal) - now there were completely processed deshborda for control and monitoring of the data-center, changes to whom were made at the request of users of oVirt (for example, an ability to manage columns of tables of representations of a context menu).
- the improved Live-Migration performance - now virtual machines move from a host to a host much quicker, besides customization the politician of VM is available during migration.
- loading of images through GIU - earlier images of virtual machines needed to be loaded from the command line, now it can be done via the web portal. Also libvirt VM can be imported using the virt-v2v utility.
- support of containers - appeared support of machines from guest Atomic OS OS for which there is also information on the containers Docker which in them are started.
- oVirt Node is the ready virtual machine with oVirt management tools based on the Cockpit panel.
- API v4 is more convenient now, works quicker and also oVirt include Ruby SDK now.

- Stateful VM Pool are pools of virtual machines in which they are started with preserving of the previous status. This status remains also when changing the owner of VM.

- use of the VGA driver instead of Cirrus for the VNC console.
- support of a format of virtual disks of qcow2.
- uniform authentication for the web administration console (WebAdmin) and for User Portal.
