2015: Announcement of an industry initiative of Open Container Project
In July, 2015 it became known of creation of a new industry initiative of Open Container Project (OCP) which purpose is standardization of container solutions. Thus, IT specialists will be able to invest in this popular approach to program virtualization, without worrying about compatibility issues, writes the CIO edition.
The OCP project created under the auspices of Linux Foundation was supported by a set of the large technology companies, including
- Amazon Web Services
- Cisco
- CoreOS
- EMC
- Fujitsu
- HP
- Huawei
- IBM
- Intel
- Microsoft
- Red Hat
- VMware
- Docker
The last provided to this project about 5% of the code of the solutions. The CoreOS company transferred the App Container specifications (appc).
Supporters of OCP hope to provide the base of compatibility for continuation of development of container decisions without further fragmentation of this direction. The industry initiative requires that program containers answered the following criteria:
- they should not be connected with high-level constructions;
- they should not become attached to a certain producer or the project;
- broad compatibility with operating systems, equipment, processor architecture and public clouds.
News about creation of the open standard for program containers became a joyful event for all who use cloud services and virtual machines as the companies will be able to forget about fragmentation which began to be about to happen after emergence of the competing solutions. OCP will allow to transfer easily a container from one hosting to another, and at the same time it will work in any environment. Users will have an opportunity to pack the applications into universal containers which will work with any tools, including Docker, rkt, Kurma and Jetpack.
It is especially noted that the format of containers is created with a careful eye to increased requirements to security. According to the chief executive of CoreOS Alex Polvi, developments of the market leader of Docker were "in a root wrong", and security model – "destroyed", but OCP will correct a situation.[1]
