2023: Product Announcement
On April 3, 2023, the American company Masimo announced the first monitoring system to detect respiratory depression caused by opioids. The over-the-counter solution can be used by adults and adolescents aged 15 and over.
A product called Opioid Halo uses an advanced pattern recognition algorithm to detect and quantify the risk of respiratory failure. If the indicators go beyond the established boundaries, alarms are sent to family members, friends or caregivers. The system notifies that help may be needed due to an opioid overdose. In this state, a violation of the cardiovascular and respiratory activities of the body occurs - up to their cessation. Therefore, a person may need emergency medical support.
The Opioid Halo complex includes a Masimo SET pulse oximeter and a sensor attached to the tip of the finger: this sensor provides real-time monitoring of indicators. The system wirelessly transmits data to the Home Medical Hub and a smartphone app. Next, information is analyzed, which makes it possible to determine respiratory depression caused by opioids.
When symptoms appear, the system gives audible and visual alarms. If the indicators deteriorate, text messages are automatically sent to the specified contacts. Thus, the solution allows you to identify potentially dangerous conditions in advance and call for help. With the threat of death, the patient can receive a life-saving dose of naloxone, an opioid receptor antagonist that is used as an antidote for opioid overdoses. Opioid Halo can be used at home, in a hospital or other care facility.[1]
