2023: Device Announcement
On March 10, 2023, American researchers from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine reported the development of a simple device that improves the symptoms of shortness of breath in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
It is noted that every tenth adult suffers from the consequences of COPD. Patients with this diagnosis take longer to remove air from the lungs due to narrowing of the airways. Therefore, with frequent breathing, for example, with physical exertion, air is retained in the lungs, which leads to a decrease in the level of oxygen in the blood. This is the main cause of shortness of breath and seriously complicates breathing.
The developed device was called PEP Buddy. Researchers say existing counterparts are bulky and uncomfortable. Therefore, scientists focused on creating the most compact device that would not cause discomfort to patients during use.
The PEP Buddy gadget is comparable in size to a regular whistle. It can be worn around the neck and used if necessary - during physical activity, sports, etc. The device makes exhalation longer and creates positive pressure at the outlet. It facilitates breathing and improves the quality of life of people with COPD. The study found that 72% of patients who used PEP Buddy in their daily lives significantly reduced shortness of breath. In addition, in 36% of the participants in the experiment, the level of oxygen in the blood stopped decreasing during physical activity.
It is noted that PEP Buddy can be a promising addition to pulmonary rehabilitation programs for faster patient recovery and consolidation of the achieved results. The creators of the device are also exploring other options for its use in healthcare.[1]
