Panasonic freeze-ray СХД

Product
Developers: Panasonic Corporation
Date of the premiere of the system: 2015
Last Release Date: 2016/11/24
Technology: DWH,  Data processing centers are technologies for DPC

The Panasonic corporation in cooperation with Facebook completed in 2015 the work on the solution freeze-ray — a system for archive data storage on optical disks. Development is intended to meet the growing demand for reliable tools for storage and access to so-called "cold" data — seldom or the information placed in data centers in all regions of the world never used.

Freeze-ray reduces operating costs and energy consumption of DPC, ensuring safety and integrity of information. Special characteristics of optical disks — their durability, compatibility with the previous versions, low power consumption and resistance to changes of the external environment — do them by an optimal solution for "cold" storage. Panasonic and Facebook believe that freeze-ray will become the effective tool for data centers.

During its creation the advanced developments of Panasonic — technology of optical disks of high density, the equipment (optical disks, drives and the corresponding automatic equipment) and also the software facilitating control over data libraries in DPCs were used. Specialists of Facebook shared the experience in design, deployment, management and service of storage systems in data centers and also provided detailed technical and user responses at each stage of product introduction. The parties worked on two generations of freeze-ray at once.

Facebook implements in the DPCs storage systems of first generation on 100 gigabyte Blu-Ray disks and considers the possibility of installation of libraries of the second generation based on the 300-gigabyte disks Archival Disc later in 2016.

Panasonic and Facebook are expected continuation of joint developments during which libraries of the next generation on the basis of disks of high density with a capacity of 500 GB and one terabyte can appear. With their help systems for "cold" data storage by total volume in several petabyte can be created.

2016: Panasonic announced Archival Disc

On November 24, 2016 the Russia Panasonic company provided freeze-ray data library on archive optical disks of Archival Disc with a capacity of 300 GB. In Russia this model will be available in April, 2017.

The disk Archival Disc is double-sided therefore use of technology of record and/or reproduction along with both parties allows doubling of data transfer rate in comparison with one-sided disks.

Structure of Archival Disc

In plans of the company to develop Archival Disc of the second and third generations. The disk of the second generation will save similar physical structure, its capacity will increase up to 500 GB, by means of increase in linear density. In disks of third generation it is going to increase density due to multilevel technology of record/reproduction and to bring capacity to 1 TB. At the same time the structure of the addresses developed for first generation of a format will be saved in the subsequent generations not to change a technology production process of disks.

At the heart of the Archival Disc format the technology of the record Land-and-groove, i.e. data writing affects tracks and in intervals between them. Technologies of suppression of cross aimings and the intersymbol interference help to increase as much as possible the capacity of data for each layer. Radial recording density is increased by 40% in comparison with Blu-ray format disks.

Expected service life of Archival Disc ~ 50 years at the ambient temperature of 50 °C and above, and up to 1 thousand years at the room temperature.
