2014: PayOnline completed transition to the safe cryptographic TLS protocol
On October 14, 2014 the description of the found critical vulnerability of the cryptographic SSL protocol was published in the blog of Google "Online Security Blog" corporation. The processing center of PayOnline in 2012 transferred process of data exchange between participants of processing of cashless payments (the payer, a processing center, merchant acquirer) to the safe TLS protocol. However for convenience of the clients continuing to use the protocol SSL, PayOnline continued support both the SSL protocol, and the TLS protocol. After vulnerability detection, aiming to ensure the maximum safety of the clients, PayOnline stopped support of SSL. Transition to the TLS protocol was complete on October 21, 2014.
Not all representatives of the market of e-commerce know what is cryptographic protocols. It is explained by the fact that in work of most online stores and online services information which needs to be transferred in encrypted form is not used. Define whether information is ciphered on any website, it is simple: it is necessary to pay attention to an address bar. If at the beginning of the website address you see https://, so the website uses HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure) - the expansion of the HTTP protocol supporting enciphering. The data transferred under the HTTPS protocol are ciphered using the cryptographic SSL or TLS protocols.
The SSL protocol was drafted in the first half of the 90th. The first version (1.0) was not published. The second version (2.0) "was issued" in 1995 and was characterized by a set of shortcomings of security relation. Their completion led to development of the third version of SSL (3.0) released in 1996. For nearly 20 years the SSL protocol was used for protection against the attacks based on listening of network connection. The set of vulnerabilities with the different level of criticality which were liquidated was during this time revealed. Experience of development and development of SSL formed a basis for creation of the TLS protocol. TLS developers considered experience and errors of predecessors, and created the safest a data encryption method today.
The processing center of PayOnline for which data security issues always were in a priority transferred process of data exchange between participants of processing of cashless payments several years ago (the payer, a processing center, merchant acquirer) to the safe TLS protocol. Because a number of clients of PayOnline continued to use the SSL protocol, the processing center for several years supported both protocols. After detection of the last serious vulnerability specialists of PayOnline made the decision on completion of support of the unsafe protocol. Recommendations about transition to the cryptographic TLS protocol were submitted to all clients of a processing center using HTTPS. Process of transition was complete on October 21. PayOnline supports the TLS protocol of all existing versions.
